Light is the product. Everything else is plumbing.

Direct-view LED is the brightest, most scalable display technology in common use, and the most misunderstood at the point of purchase. This is the working explanation, minus the sales gloss.

What a direct-view LED display actually is

A direct-view LED display is a grid of individual light-emitting diodes that are themselves the image — no backlight, no liquid-crystal layer, no panel in the LCD sense. Each pixel is made of tiny red, green and blue diodes that emit their own light, which is why LED can go far brighter than any backlit screen and why it scales to the side of a building without the seams and viewing-angle limits of tiled LCD. The trade-off is resolution density: because each pixel is a cluster of physical diodes with real spacing between them, you cannot pack them as tightly as the sub-pixels printed on an LCD. That single fact — diodes have size and spacing — drives almost every decision that follows, from how close you can stand to what the thing costs.

Why people buy it, and why they get it wrong

LED gets specified for three honest reasons: brightness that survives daylight and large rooms, scale without bezels, and a lifespan measured in years of continuous operation. It gets bought wrongly when those strengths are confused with "more resolution" or "better picture," which LED is not automatically — a poorly chosen LED wall viewed too close looks coarse, and an expensively fine-pitch wall viewed from across a plaza wastes most of what it paid for. The skill in buying LED is matching the pixel pitch to the viewing distance and the brightness to the environment, and almost every disappointing LED installation got one of those two matches wrong. The technology is rarely the problem; the specification usually is.

These notes take the three decisions that matter in order. Pixel pitch and viewing distance is the one that determines whether the image looks right and how much you spend. Indoor versus outdoor is a different engineering problem hiding behind the same word "LED." And operation — the part nobody costs — is what keeps the wall looking like it did on day one. The aim throughout is to give the buyer enough to ask the questions a good supplier will happily answer and a weak one will dodge.
